Rafael Zanatta

Rafael A. F. Zanatta is the co-director of Data Privacy Brasil, a digital rights organization based in São Paulo. He is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of São Paulo Faculty of Law (USP), investigating the history and theory of digital rights in Latin America. Zanatta holds a PhD from the Institute of Energy and Environment of University of São Paulo, with a period at the Institute of Information Law of the University of Amsterdam. He has a Master's degree in Law, Economics and Finance from the International University College of Turin. He holds a Master's degree in Philosophy and General Theory of Law from the University of São Paulo Faculty of Law and a Bachelor's degree in Law from the State University of Maringá.
Zanatta is a member of the Latin American Network of Surveillance, Technology and Society Studies (Lavits) and was a visiting researcher on platforms and digital economy at The New School. He edited the books “Sharing economies and law” (Juruá, 2017) and “Data, digital markets and competition” (Casa do Direito, 2022). He is the author of “The collective protection of personal data in Brazil: vectors of interpretation” (Letramento, 2023).
As a digital rights activist, Zanatta co-founded the Coalition "Direitos na Rede" in Brazil in 2016, a coalition of 55 organizations that advocated for the data protection law. He also worked for InternetLab and was the coordinator of the digital rights program of the Brazilian Institute of Consumer Defense. He currently sits on the civil society board of the Global Network Initiative (GNI) and is the founder of the Global South Alliance.
